Today is the 3rd day since News24, the news television station, had its signal cut off, as a result of a police intervention in the premises where this media outlet operated, while journalists and any other employees were not allowed to enter the work premises.
A protest was announced this afternoon by one of the media associations operating in Albania.
This is about the Journalists Association of Albania, which will protest at 12:00 in front of the News24 building, which has been under control by the State Police since Saturday morning.
"Democracy dies in darkness" is expected to be the headline of today's protest, where dozens of journalists, public figures, politicians and activists have confirmed their participation in the protest in solidarity with News24 colleagues.
230 journalists, technical staff and employees of Focus Media News and Panorama Group have not been allowed to enter the premises of News24, BalkanWeb and Panorama for 3 days. The premises where the media offices are located are surrounded by State Police and Military personnel, creating unusual and unworthy scenes for a media outlet and, moreover, for the largest news television station in the country.
The premises are expected to be transferred to the KAYO company led by Ardi Veliu, although there is an ongoing legal process for the buildings in which News24, at least in one of them, according to the contract, must remain until 2033. Meanwhile, in the other, there is again a legal process as Albanian law gives News24 the right to purchase it (the building), given that it has made a certain investment over the years.
The Journalists' Association of Albania calls on all citizens and social actors to join this protest, to protect the fundamental right to information and to demand the immediate restoration of the normal functioning of News24 and its affiliated media.
