Huma Abedin and Alex Soros are officially husband and wife. The newlyweds said "I do" in front of special guests.

The Democratic establishment descended on the Hamptons this weekend for a kind of royal political wedding that brought together the worlds of politics, big money and Clinton-era insiders.

The newlyweds Alex Soros, son of George Soros, the Democratic Party's most generous backer, and Huma Abedin, a political aide who has been described as almost a daughter to Hillary Clinton, the former first lady and secretary of state. Held on Saturday at a Soros family estate in Water Mill, N.Y., the wedding brought together individuals with a rare concentration of wealth and power.

Beyond the couple’s family, the guest list included Mrs. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton; former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff; Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader; former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; celebrities such as Nicky Hilton Rothschild; cultural figures such as Vogue editor Anna Wintour; early Clinton friends such as San Francisco power broker Susie Tompkins Buell; and foreign dignitaries such as Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The vocal group Boyz II Men performed at the wedding, according to two attendees, and among those toasting were Soros’ brother Jonathan, Mrs. Clinton, Mrs. Wintour and Mr. Rama. Dishes included truffle agnolotti, English pea soup, Wagyu beef and grilled shrimp.

It is reported that "many special drinks" with champagne and tequila were also served.

According to Vogue, the bride wore two custom wedding dresses for the two-ceremony celebration: one from Erdem and one from Givenchy, designed by Erdem Moralıoğlu and Sarah Burton, respectively.

The celebrations coincided with an unusually chaotic weekend at home and abroad. Protesters gathered across the country to oppose President Trump, even as he held an unusual military parade in Washington; a Minnesota lawmaker was killed in a new outbreak of political violence; and attacks between Israel and Iran fueled fears of a wider conflagration in the Middle East.

Everything was much quieter in the Hamptons, as caravans of black SUVs transported wedding attendees along a narrow wooded lane and through a gate surrounded by purple flowers.

Mr. Soros is one of the most intriguing figures in the world of philanthropy. The holder of a doctorate in history, he has taken over after decades from his father, now 94, who has supported liberal causes around the world. Alex Soros has called himself “more of a politician” than his father.

Alex, 39, has revealed that he is comfortable in the spotlight and has posted forcefully on social media, detailing his meetings with Democratic leaders. He is likely to be a significant part of the liberal philanthropy scene for decades, and many in progressive circles want to stand by him.

His romance with Ms. Abedin, 49, has captivated parts of high society. That's partly because her last marriage deteriorated in spectacular fashion: Her ex-husband, former Rep. Anthony Weiner, was embroiled in multiple scandals before she announced their separation in 2016.

Mr. Soros and Ms. Abedin announced their engagement last July. They initially planned to elope, Vogue reported Saturday, but changed their minds after an engagement party co-hosted by Ms. Clinton in December, where attendees pressured the couple to have a more traditional celebration.

"I think she deserves to have a moment like that," Mrs. Clinton told the magazine.

The weekend celebrations included a smaller ceremony to honor both Ms. Abedin's Muslim faith and Mr. Soros' Jewish heritage.

Unlike Mr. Soros, Ms. Abedin has shown a desire for privacy. She began working for Mrs. Clinton as a 19-year-old intern while attending George Washington University, and gradually rose to more senior roles.

Her marriage to Mr. Soros will cement them as a political couple and they will continue to find themselves in the public spotlight.

The scene of the wealthy was particularly impressive given the Democratic Party's fierce debate over how to improve its historically low standing among voters and win back working-class Americans, with whom it is widely seen as having lost touch.

As Maseratis, Porsches and other luxury cars rolled down the road outside the ceremony site, a few curious drivers slowed down before security officers quickly pushed them away. A woman leaned out of the passenger seat and waved, shouting, “Hello, Bill!” It was not clear whether Mr. Clinton was within striking distance.

The wedding could be the most coveted summer gathering of elite society for just a few weeks. Later this month, some of the same guests will travel to Venice for the wedding of another power couple: Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez. / Adapted from the NyTimes/
