A preliminary hearing is expected to be held today in the case of former Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj, his wife and other individuals.
The hearing will review the criminal charges against Veliaj, who has been behind bars since February 10, and will decide whether or not the case against the former mayor will go to trial.
The previous session was postponed due to the lawyers' boycott over the detention of lawyer Ulian Barjami, after the clash with the prosecutor in the courtroom, an event that occurred at the Elbasan Court. We recall that on Thursday, October 2, the High Court dismissed the appeal of Erion Veliaj, who requested the replacement of the personal security measure "prison arrest" with a milder measure.
Veliaj was arrested on February 10 after being accused of, together with his wife Ajola Xoxa, building a complex corruption and money laundering scheme to illegally benefit from the capital's municipality funds and bribes from businessmen, its contractors, using a network of companies and non-profit organizations.
According to SPAK, the mayor of the capital and his wife have benefited from around 1 million euros from this corrupt scheme, money that was mainly used for luxury online purchases by Ajola Xoxa.
