File in GJKKO, Berisha in SPAK for the 'Partizani' affair

Democratic leader Sali Berisha has appeared before SPAK, in compliance with the security measure of mandatory appearance, regarding the 'Partizani' affair.

Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha faces charges of corruption, while his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, and businessman Fatmir Bektashi are accused of involvement in corruption and illegal money laundering activities.

Meanwhile, the prosecution has filed charges against the other two defendants, Xhimi Begeja and Andia Pustina, a financier at the company "Homeplan", for involvement in money laundering schemes.

SPAK has referred the 'Partizani' file to the GJKKO for trial, while the next session is expected to take place today.

In the previous session, Berisha and Malltez's lawyers requested the exclusion of the trial panel with the argument that they want to be tried by an impartial court, since according to them, the GJKKO is under the control of SPAK. According to them, all the GJKKO judges are blackmailable.

But this request was rejected by the GJKKO. Earlier, the rapporteur of the trial panel, Elsa Ulliri, was also denied a request to resign from the case by the deputy president of the court. The judge requested resignation on the grounds that she is a cousin of Democrat Andia Ulliri.

The Partizani affair case went to trial on May 19, a few days after the May 11 elections, and after being delayed for 7 months in a preliminary hearing.

Berisha will be tried on charges of passive corruption of senior officials, as he is accused of having, in his capacity as prime minister, taken concrete actions in approving laws and by-laws, where his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, was also a beneficiary.
