The money that immigrants bring to Albania has marked a historical record, at least since 2008, when the data is reported by the Bank of Albania.
In the first 6 months of the year, remittances reached 444 million euros, with an increase of 18% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Sources from local money transfer operators said that Germany and England are new corridors, compared to traditional ones such as Greece, Italy or Germany, and have a better performance in the trend of sending money to their relatives in Albania.
Other Eurostat data show that the Albanian population living abroad is growing, which is also keeping remittances afloat.
According to Eurostat, in 2022 about 74 thousand Albanian citizens received a residence permit in one of the EU countries. Compared to a year ago, the number of permits has increased by 34%. Meanwhile, this is the highest figure found since 2010, clearly showing an increasing trend of people leaving the country with the intention of living and working in one of the European Union states.
Since 2008, when the earliest Eurostat data is reported, European Union countries have granted a total of 832,000 residence permits to Albanian citizens.
This figure is almost a third of the population that is reported to live in Albania. The census that will take place this year will accurately show the number of people who have remained in the country.
