Alban Gropçaj was a 28-year-old Albanian living in Italy who was killed in circumstances that are still unclear on February 18, 2019, while traveling by car with his friend, an Italian businessman. The incident that took the young man's life occurred on a street in the suburbs of Fortaleza, Brazil.
Before local investigators, businessman Guido Bertola told police that two young men on a motorbike followed their car, until at one point they stopped it at gunpoint. Guido, who was driving, was dragged out of the vehicle and only moments later he heard a shot.
After getting up, he saw the motorcycle speed away, while a few meters further he noticed Albani with no signs of life.
The next day, Bertola is questioned by investigators and immediately arrested, accused of being the person who organized the murder of his Albanian friend. Silvia De Souza, Guido's Brazilian girlfriend, is also accused of being a co-organizer of the murder.
But a month after the murder, things change. The key witness changes his statements and Guido is released from prison, to immediately return to Italy. But who was this witness so important to the prosecution, who later withdrew? It is José De Souza, who worked as a guard at the Italian businessman's villa in Fortaleza. Immediately after the event, José had told Brazilian investigators how in January 2019, a month before the crime, Guido had given him an envelope with money to deliver to Romario, his and Silvia's cousin, who according to De Souza's first testimony had been paid to kill Alban.
The investigators also had another very important element to accuse the 66-year-old and his Brazilian girlfriend: the testimony of Tarcizo Perreira, a gentleman who lives a few meters from the scene. In his testimony, Perreira says that, while returning home by car, he noticed a motorcycle with two people on the right side of the road. As soon as he entered the garage, he heard shots. He immediately ran outside and saw the motorcycle speed away. After this testimony, the police raised the question: Why were the two people on the motorcycle waiting? Were they waiting for the car they had been notified about to arrive?
Eyewitness Perreira also adds that, when he went out into the street and approached Guido, who was next to Albani's lifeless body, the 66-year-old did not seem at all in a state of shock or despair, as would naturally come to any person who would find themselves in such a situation.
But let's go back in time, 45 days before Albani's murder, on his first visit with Guido to Brazil. The two friends were inside the villa owned by the Bertola family. A little further away, in another apartment, Silvia, the businessman's girlfriend, was with her husband. Under still unclear circumstances, the latter discovers the truth – the wife's extramarital affair – and immediately kicks her out of the house. From the cell phones seized by the police after the murder, it is learned that Silvia had informed Guido about what had happened in her house.
Chat dialogue:
– “What do I do now?” – asks Silvia.
– “Stay calm. Come on, stay with us.” – Guido replies.
– "Honey, I'm afraid of Albi. I'm afraid he might hurt me. Send him to hell." – she adds.
– “You don't have to be afraid, it's me. Oh, if only I could do it.” – Guido continues.
During questioning by investigators, Guido gave a version that was both unbelievable and insulting to the victim:
"He had a lot of gambling debts, he often went to Turin."
So Albani had debts in Italy and someone traveled all the way to Brazil to kill him? Really hard to believe.
"We from the north have our traditions. They took our brother and treacherously killed him in Brazil. If justice does not work, we have nothing left but the canon."
This harsh reaction from Albani's brother comes not only from the fact that Guido Bertola was released and returned home, but also because of the completely unreliable alibi, which casts doubt on the victim.
However, we must not forget that the 66-year-old Italian continues to be accused by Brazilian prosecutors along with his girlfriend, Silvia De Souza./Piranjat
