'Courage was rewarded', Meloni happy after Brussels' aid for

Giorgia Meloni's new plan for migrant centers in Albania has been well received in Brussels, where the Commission has given the green light to the Italian Prime Minister's idea.

The Italian government decided on March 28 to change the use of centers that have been set up in the Balkan country to transfer asylum procedures, after several Italian courts found the agreement legal under European law.

The government approved a decree to transform the facilities into detention centres for repatriation (CPR), where migrants who have received deportation orders will be transferred while awaiting their actual repatriation. In short, pending the decision of the EU Court of Justice on safe countries and without giving up on the project for the accelerated border procedure, the government has aimed to immediately put into operation the centres created following the agreement between Rome and Tirana.

And this idea has received initial approval from Brussels. "We are in contact with the Italian authorities. According to our information, Italian law will be applied to the Italian-managed centres in Albania, as it has been before. However, in principle, this is legal under EU law," a Commission spokesman said at the daily press conference in Brussels.

In fact, current European legislation prohibits this type of practice, but the Commission has foreseen the possibility of introducing "return centres" in its proposal for a regulation on returns presented on March 11.

The pact with Albania is "a model that was initially criticized, but then gained more and more consensus," Meloni claimed in a video message sent to the Border Security Summit, a meeting organized by Keir Starmer's British government on the topic of border security and the fight against irregular entry.

"All the more so since today the European Union proposes the creation of repatriation centers in third countries. This means that we were right and the courage to lead the way has been rewarded," added Meloni.

In fact, during the presentation of the plan, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, explained that the executive's project was "something completely different from the model of the Pact between Italy and Albania, which deals with asylum seekers." / Pamphlet/
