Enriko Ceko, a food safety expert, says that the control system over the food supply chain is not working.
Ceko said that it is the duty of the NFA to carry out controls on imported food products.
'There is no competition in the Albanian economy. The entire market is concentrated in a few hands that control demand and supply. When we talk about food, we understand quality. But there is more, there is also food safety and guarantee. This is a matter of national security. Today, war is not only fought with weapons, it is also fought through food, and through the air with incinerators. War is also fought by poisoning water. Quality classifies products. So, when you go to the market, you buy it for certain characteristics. The guarantee is what is related to consumption, so when we go home and eat it, it does not harm us. We do not have the chance to have a control system throughout the entire supply chain. We control certain points and with them we control the wrong thing. We control large plants. Why are those who make mistakes in production stupid?
Imported goods must have a certificate of association with the goods. The importer's duty is to notify the Albanian authorities before importing. It is the duty of the AKU to go and take the sample. If the analysis is in order, the goods are allowed to enter. Now we arrest the owner of the importing company. What does the administrator have to do with this? Ceko added that the NFA has turned into a politicized institution that cannot perform the function assigned to it by law.
'The AKU has only 200 inspectors. Most of them are not professionals. There are at least 5 people in the AKU with a doctorate and their boss has a bachelor's degree. So, the ignorant boss controls these people.
