Today the Internal Affairs Commission of the Home Office in Great Britain has published a report regarding the requests of Albanian asylum seekers in England.
"In no case will asylum be offered to Albanians as Albania is a safe country, it is not at war and as a candidate country it aspires to become part of the European Union," states the public report .
Great Britain has no basis to accept thousands of requests for asylum from Albanian citizens, the Internal Affairs Committee finds. However, it is noted that some Albanian citizens have requested asylum with the argument that they are victims of trafficking and that some girls and women are at risk from this type of crime.
The report also states that Great Britain has the obligation to support the victims of trafficking and return them to Albania only if appropriate measures are taken to protect them. In the language of numbers, last year a quarter of the 45,755 people who crossed the English Channel in small boats came from Albania and most sought asylum.
Within a year, the number of Albanians who arrived in England by dinghy increased from 800 to 12,301, an increase that was so sudden and inexplicable. However, in June 2022, 51% of asylum requests from Albanians were accepted, a high figure if compared to other European nationalities.
A powerful reason to emigrate is the economy. Albanians undertake these dangerous dinghy journeys to earn income and the desire to come to Britain will continue, the report says, until Albania becomes more prosperous. According to the Home Office report, only 325 work visas were granted to Albanian citizens last year, this shows that the difficulties in securing a work visa in sectors such as construction and agriculture are great. As a result, Albanians have chosen clandestine routes to emigrate to Great Britain.
