"They come in with bags and don't declare themselves", analyst:

Analyst Pano Soko has spoken about the phenomenon of money laundering in Albania. For many years, our country has been on the gray list of Moneyval (a mechanism of the European Commission that evaluates the risk of money laundering). Today we are under monitoring, and we are waiting for the new evaluation from the European Commission.

"The fact that we got off the Moneyval list is like going to set a house on fire and then being glad you put it out. Our problem is not whether or not we are on the list of Moneyval, but whether the money is cleaned or not", said Pano Soko for "Euronews Albania".

The construction sector is considered a money laundering machine, where 3.7 billion euros were invested last year, but only 800 million went to the banking sector.

"Construction should be the economic vanguard of development, the fact that today it is the fourth or fifth sector, shows that informality in construction is very large here. It is money that comes in with bags, is not declared and in the end is returned to value. The government then declares someone who buys apartments to be of low value, and then gives them an amnesty," said Soko.

In an interview with RAI3 television, Prime Minister Edi Rama does not accept that the country is a launderer of money laundering through the giant towers in Tirana, saying that the government has set up a very strong regime to fight this phenomenon and the second reason is related with the capital invested by Albanian immigrants, who today invest much more than before.
