A 22-year-old from Berat, Xhuljano Kaloti, has remained stranded in the waters of the Osum River since noon today, while he was involved in assisting RENEA forces in the search for 42-year-old Ilir Kurti.
According to information from residents of the Skrapar area, the incident occurred during search operations in the Osumi Canyons to find the body of Ilir Kurti, who is suspected of being thrown into the river on the evening of February 19.
Sources on the ground indicate that while canoeing, one of the rafts capsized due to the strong current of the water. As a result, Xhuljano Kaloti was trapped among the rocks in the area known as the "Third Strait", near the entrance to a cave.
The young man has been in the water for hours, while efforts to retrieve him have encountered difficulties. According to the same sources, helicopters have been requested to pull him out with a rope from the air, but so far there have been no reports of air intervention in the area.
Low temperatures and icy water in the canyons posed a serious risk to the life of the 22-year-old, who had entered the operation to assist special forces.
It is learned that there are residents in the area who are trying to help by throwing ropes from the height of the rocks, while the intervention of the fire department is difficult due to the steep terrain and difficult conditions.
The Osumi Canyons are about 12 kilometers long and up to 90 meters deep. In conditions of high water flows, intervention in this area is considered high-risk, especially for people untrained in such operations. The rescue operation continues.
