From the full list of 71 people, 14 witnesses are being questioned today in the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime in relation to the Gërdec tragedy.
One of them is Alketa Hazizi, who was employed in the dismantling factory together with her father-in-law, who later became a victim of the explosion on March 15, 2008.
In her testimony before the court, Hazizi said that she was hired without a contract and that she started the dismantling process without any training. According to her, they dismantled the projectile heads with a hammer and then threw the gunpowder into bags.
" I worked for several months, my father-in-law lost his life in the explosion. We didn't have work contracts and we hadn't done any training on how to dismantle weapons. At first, together with my husband and father-in-law, we started by disassembling cartridges and then moved on to shells. The procedure was the same, we dismantled them with a hammer, removed the diabola, and then the shells were taken with a sledgehammer, while the gunpowder was bagged and sent to the warehouse. The whole field was filled with gunpowder, I didn't understand where the flames came from, I just heard the screams, flames, I looked up and saw that the fire was in the gunpowder bags. The flames were high and we had no way to put them out. After that, we all tried to run away to escape," she declared.
As for the day of the explosion, she said that she simply saw the flames and people screaming, and then tried to leave the factory. Hazizi said that during the attempt to leave he stepped on the bodies of dead people, as he added that he managed to escape with a burn on 32 percent of his body.
"We filled the bags with gunpowder and transported them in carts, I heard the screams, I saw the flames there, I was almost 10 meters away from the flames. The fire was in the lower part of the factory. I only know Dritan Minxolli and Vangjeli. Running away, I stepped on casualties, I fell near the main gate, I saw that it was on fire but I could not leave, I had 32% of my body burned. I have never seen Fatmir Mediu, nor do I know him. There I saw another person whose name I don't remember. Then I mention Mihal Delijorgji ", she testified.
