"They sent them to Montenegro and killed them"/ Report on the

Two reports of the head of the People's Protection Section, Zoi Themeli, bring evidence of what happened to the Albanian recruits while they were in the territory of the Albanian state. The communist authorities of the time, in the role of a spectator on the one hand and a helper to the Yugoslav aggressors, did nothing to ensure the lives of these recruits, but demanded their surrender. What immediately stands out in Zoi Themel's reports are the serious mistakes at the top of the letter, as instead of the Directorate of People's Protection, "Ministry of People's Protection" was written.

The name of the time was the Ministry of National Defense. In the relevant information, after explaining the events that happened, the center, the People's Protection Directorate, is asked to clarify whether or not the already arrested Kosovars should be handed over to the Yugoslavs. In addition to the half-left information, Zoi Themeli herself, in the statement given in the process to Koçi Xoxes, has admitted that all the Kosovar "deserters" were handed over to the Yugoslavs. Below are three pieces of information.

Directorate of People's Protection, Tirana

On April 2 at midnight and right there from 1:10 a.m. (the time is unclear in the writing - note), while the Yugoslav partisans were transporting a number of 1,500 Kosovars to the other side of Buna, to take them to Mount Zi, although they were ordered to stay on the ground without moving, a Kosovar pulled himself to the edge of Buna and then jumped into the water and began to swim in order to escape.

At the same time, the guards ordered him and shot them with rifles and bombs. The Kosovar who jumped into the river was never seen again.

After that, the Yugoslav guards, enraged by this, retreated back and without reason, began to add to the crowd of Kosovars, who were sitting and standing still. In this strike, 7 people were killed (among them a Yugoslav) and 13 others were injured (among them a Yugoslav).

A total of 18 killed and wounded Kosovars and 2 Yugoslavs. All of them, like Kosovars and Yugoslavs, were killed by Yugoslav partisans.

An act like this shows the hatred that these two parties have between them and even worse the bad treatment that the Yugoslavs gave to the Kosovars.

We add that the perpetrators of this event are the Yugoslavs themselves, who unjustly pushed the crowd of Kosovars.

As I informed you by radiogram, before about the event in Tetova, we are sending you some more clarifications.

Yesterday, the guards of the 2nd People's Protection Brigade were at the Buna bridge ten (10) Kosovars, who had fled from Tetova and were coming here. When they questioned them, we answered like this: "All the way, since we started from Kosovo, the Yugoslavs tortured and beat us. They didn't even let us drink water on the way.

When we went to Tivar, they put us in a narrow street where we were lined up for four; at this time, while we were relaxing, we heard the crackling of several rifles, bombs and machine guns from all sides, and they added to us. To us, it seemed like a surprise and we didn't know what was going on and why they were killing us.

At this time, the friends we had in front and behind were being killed, we became confused and saw nothing but what it looked like, but we ran away as best we could. From the hills and from the houses they shouted at us who were going.

500 people were killed, wounded and dispersed. Scattered quite a bit, while the killed and wounded are many.

We also add that when we were in Kosovo, a part of us who had seen, were able to escape by giving themselves to the partisans and they were released, taking them out sick.

You have noticed the behavior of these Yugoslav partisans in the event here, which took place on April 2, 1945, where 18 people were killed and wounded, and as far as we have discovered, they were killed in vain.

So, since all these events that are so important that happened between the Yugoslav partisans and the mobilized Kosovar people, we have been put in doubt that among the partisans, there will be Serbian chauvinists - big ones who try to divide the peoples and they do, who hate each other to death.

On the other hand, they give occasion to the internal and external reaction, so that I can observe them and have a place to catch them. As far as we have seen and thought, we understand in this way.

Now let us know about these Kosovars we captured, to send them to the Yugoslavs, or to accompany them there.

Let us know about it.

Zoi Themel's statement in the investigative process against Koçi Xoxes, April 1949

From the middle of 1945, the Yugoslavs, accompanying a number of Kosovars mobilized to Montenegro, killed them en masse on the way, without any guilt. From this action, some Kosovars were able to escape and surrender to our bodies, asking for mercy and protection to save their heads.

We, seeing these inhuman actions, have notified the Security Directorate with telegrams and letters and have suggested that the rescued should not be given to the Yugoslavs, because they would kill them.

At the same time, we asked to inform the Yugoslav government, as we remembered that they were done without their knowledge. But Koçi Xoxe ordered us to surrender the Kosovars to the Yugoslavs. We did not receive this order well. From what we have been informed, some of the repatriates have died in Yugoslavia./ Monitor
