The US armed forces have launched a new wave of military strikes against Iranian targets in response to the activities of Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz.
The new strikes began at 6 a.m. Eastern Time, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. They are intended to “further degrade the military capabilities” used by Iranian forces to attack merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Since last week, the US has carried out such strikes, mostly at night, including four consecutive days. The latest attacks follow a series of escalations after the failure of a ceasefire reached in June.
Iranian authorities reported that the attacks last night killed seven Iranian military personnel and wounded more than 260 people. Iranian state media reported explosions in areas such as Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Jask and Sirik. Meanwhile, local authorities in Hormozgan province said that so far there have been no civilian casualties in some of the recent attacks.
The US accuses Iran of attacking commercial ships, including oil tankers, while Tehran considers the US action as direct aggression and a violation of previous agreements. The situation remains tense, with the risk of further escalation in the region.
