After 26 years, the murder case of two Albanians, who were executed in 1999 in Essen-Schonnebeck, is being reopened.
The crime has remained unsolved, while the double crime has been considered by German authorities as a mafia murder, citing suspicions that the two Albanians were involved in drug trafficking.
Altan. B and Alban. M were victims of gunfire in an ambush organized on June 7, 1999, and were executed with bullets in the head and body.
That's why two investigators from the Essen police are now reopening the case.
Retired police officers Detlef Büttner and Michael Detscher are making another attempt to achieve what the 20-member homicide squad led by Chief Inspector Klaus Welski was unable to do: solve the cold-blooded double murder and put the perpetrators behind bars.
An anonymous caller contacts the Essen police. There have been shots fired behind the asylum seeker's house in Garnbleiche. Several patrols rush to the crime scene. In a roundabout they come across a Ford Escort with Essen license plates. To the right and left lie the bloodied bodies of 20 and 24-year-old Albanians and a large number of 7.65-millimeter cartridges used in the criminal environment of the time.
One of the victims still has the car keys in his hand, the driver's seat of the Ford has been folded forward and the victims' jackets are in the back seat. The men may have been about to leave when they were surprised by the fatal shots.
On the night of the crime, investigators arrested five Albanians in the city area. However, during interrogation, it turned out that there was no reasonable suspicion against them. They were unable or unwilling to provide the police with any valuable information – perhaps in self-defense.
"These interrogations are a very sensitive story. With every statement, they risk being framed for drug distribution or facing retaliation from the environment as exposed traitors," a criminal police officer said at the time.
The two victims of the serious crime had been running their drug deals in Essen for some time. Police consider the Kosovo Albanians, some of whom have military training, to be brutal lone warriors who act ruthlessly against competitors as the market tightens. It is said that these guys have nothing to lose after fleeing their war-torn homeland.
According to the police, the fact that the asylum seeker home in Garnbleiche in particular became a favorite center in the 1990s is largely due to its favorable location.
inquiry
The reopening of the case seems to focus on a different direction. It is believed that the reason for the assassination is that one of the victims had started a relationship with the wife of the drug lord, who was in prison at the time.
The boss also apparently suspected that the victim had embezzled large sums of money from drug deals, reasons more than enough to eliminate him.
Altan B. and Alban M. were probably summoned for their execution by phone, not knowing what awaited them. Two gunmen shot at the men from close range, a third was sitting in a red car in which the perpetrators fled after the murder.
