Abuse of EU funds, the terms of detention for Ilir Beqaj are extended by 3

The Special Court has extended by 3 months the terms of detention for former minister Ilir Beqaj, who is accused of abusing EU funds. The deadlines for Ermal Kurtulaj have also been postponed.

The court, with a panel headed by judge Rudina Palloj, decided to extend the deadlines from January 4, 2025, ensuring the continuity of the investigations. The decision can be appealed within 15 days to the Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime. This decision comes as part of efforts to guarantee the full development of investigations in matters related to corruption and organized crime.

The former minister Beqaj was arrested for the SASPAC funds file by order of the SPAK in July, when the GJKKO left him in prison, while he is being prosecuted for the Sterilization issue. There are 8 people under accusation in this file, among them the businessman Ilir Rrapaj, as in March of this year SPAK sent the Sterilization file for trial.

Announcement of GJKKO:

1. The applicant, the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime, on 16.12.2024, submitted to the Court the request with the object: "Extension of the terms of detention for a period of three months in connection with the security measure "Arrest in prison" provided by the article 238 of the Penal Code for the persons under investigation Ilir Beqaj and Ermal Kurtulaj, designated by decision No. 65 dated 03.07.2024 of the First Instance Special Court for Corruption and Organized Crime".

2. At the end of the trial, the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime with a panel composed of judge Rudina Palloj, based on articles 112, 238, 263 and 264 of the Criminal Code, with decision No. . 731, dated 30.12.2024, decided:

1. The acceptance of the request of the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime with No. 731 of the basic register, registration date 16.12.2024, with the request of the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime, with the object "Extension of the terms of detention for a period of three months in connection with the security measure "Arrest in prison" provided by article 238 of K.Pr. Penale for the persons under investigation Ilir Beqaj and Ermal Kurtulaj, designated by decision No. 65 dated 03.07.2024 of the First Instance Special Court for Corruption and Organized Crime".

2. The extension of the term of detention, namely the duration of the personal security measure "Arrest in prison", determined by decision No. 65 dated 03.07.2024, continued with decision No. 73 dated 06.07.2024 of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, within the framework of criminal proceedings No. 190 of 2023, for the person under investigation Ilir Hamid Beqaj, for a period of 3 (three) months, starting this term from 04.01.2025.

3. The extension of the term of detention, respectively of the duration of the personal security measure "Arrest in prison", determined by decision No. 65 dated 03.07.2024, continued with decision No. 73 dated 06.07.2024 of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, within the framework of criminal proceedings No. 190 of 2023, for the person under investigation Ermal Xhemal Kurtulaj, for a period of 3 (three) months, starting this term from 04.01.2025.

4. An appeal can be made against the decision to the Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime, within 15 (fifteen) days, starting from the day after the communication of the reasoned decision.
