NASA has made an unusual promise for the 2026 World Cup: if the United States national team wins the world title, an official soccer ball will be sent to the Moon.
The pledge was made by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman during a presentation by the agency on the Artemis program and plans to establish a sustainable human presence near the Moon's south pole. Addressing the US national team, he presented the initiative as an additional motivation for the team.
" A little motivation for the US team. We're going to surpass Alan Shepard, who played golf on the lunar surface, and send a soccer ball to the moon ," Isaacman declared.
Isaacman also recalled one of the most special episodes in the history of American space exploration. Astronaut Alan Shepard, commander of the Apollo 14 mission, played golf on the Moon in 1971, after secretly taking with him two golf balls and a makeshift club, creating one of the most symbolic moments of the Apollo missions.
Beyond its symbolic nature, NASA's initiative aims to connect the excitement of the 2026 World Cup with the United States' new ambitions to return astronauts to the Moon through the Artemis program.
