The Italian businessman, Davide Pecorelli, who shocked public opinion in Albania and across the sea with the story of the disappearance he fabricated to avoid the many debts he had accumulated, breaks his silence.
In an exclusive interview for Top Channel, Pecorelli does not agree with the punishment given by the Albanian authorities for fraud, but says that he is ready to surrender in September.
"The Court of First Instance in Shkodër sentenced me to 6 years in prison, but I have to serve 4 years with a shortened trial. My lawyer has appealed. Being punished all these years without evidence hurts, of course because there is no evidence of serious fraud. And it hurts me even more that the Court of Periugia has approved my extradition to an Albanian prison. But I will not wait for them to arrest me, to come and take me. I will present myself, I will come to Albania in September because I am afraid of the arrival of the police at home. Moreover, the punishment will be less since one of the crimes, that of illegal crossing of the border, was dropped due to the amnesty, so I am expected to serve 3 years and 8 months in prison.
Davide says that in Italy he is a free citizen, that he has no problems with justice there. He explains to Top Channel that he is afraid that when Albanian justice acquits him, he will have finished his sentence here.
"I have made recourse, but recourse will require time, it will be after 2 or more years. I will be in prison, I will have served 3 or more years in prison when it is proven that I am not guilty. They accuse me of having violated a grave, when in Puka they have not found any open graves where the bones are missing. As for the priest who helped me escape from Albania, I will never tell his name, as I don't want to be accused of being a collaborator with me".
The businessman surprises further by clarifying that he has started the procedures for obtaining Albanian citizenship. He says that he is ready to open a new business in Albania after settling his accounts with justice.
"I am getting Albanian citizenship because I want to be an Albanian citizen after I married an Albanian woman. I am the father of four children and I want to have the same rights as an Albanian. I expect to receive Albanian citizenship in December. After closing the chapter with justice, I want to open a wine shop because my wife's family has a business in Lungomare. I want to make it a place where you drink Albanian raki and Italian wine, I want to make it a place where you drink raki and Italian wine"
Davide Pecorelli disappeared in January 2021 in Puka, where the car he had rented was found burnt, inside which was also a skeleton which he later admitted he had taken from the Puka cemetery.
While Italy and Albania were investigating his fate on September 17 of the same year, Pecorelli appeared safe and sound in a raft near the island of Montecristo, in search of a treasure, while for 9 months everyone knew he was missing.
