Socialist Party MP Ardit Bido debated with analyst Andi Bushati about the May 11 elections.
Invited to the show "The Unexposed", Bushati described Albania as a non-democratic country, where elections cannot change the government, while Bido said that Albania has undergone developments, is integrating and is visited by European leaders.
Studio debate:
Andi Bushati : Even if we take for granted what Bido says, that we had an opposition that did not exist and small ones that did not become an alternative, enough of that, it is worth raising the question, is this a democratic country? Where no one can form a real and credible opposition, there must be an anomaly, a problem. Are we a people who eternally want a party? Are we a people who do not have alternative thinking?
But that's not the problem. The problem is that we had no choice at all. What you mentioned is luxury, the cream of manipulation, pension increases, the forgiveness of fines. But what do we do about the intimidation of voters, the theft of citizens' personal data to pass it on to patronage agents, the use of gangs, the media that turned into a caricature? These create an environment where it is not even mentioned that Albanians were given the right to choose. This worries me. We have a real problem, do we have democracy and can we hold elections and not votes?
Ardit Bido : Alternative thinking exists in Albania. One of the representatives is Bushati. Alternative thinking is also in the Socialist Party.
Ylli Rakipi : Now alternative thinking there…
Ardit Bido : There are different political models. To say there is no pluralism of opinion is excessive.
Andi Bushati : Political pluralism, not opinion.
Ardit Bido : We treat Albania like it was 20 years ago. After the elections, we welcomed all the leaders of European countries.
Andi Bushati : Like Putin's Russia, which without attacking Ukraine, the whole world went there. Or like Erdogan.
Ardit Bido : There is no chance of these people gathering in any of these places. We are in an integration process…
Andi Bushati : In the European political community, there is also Aliyev and Erdogan.
Ardit Bido : Albania is a country that has significantly more investment, welfare, in which the electoral treatment, of elections, as a completely poor country, without pluralism of thought, in which this poverty produces a drag on the part of a tyrannical majority does not hold. Albanians, among the alternatives they had, chose the best.
Andi Bushati : We no longer live in a democracy. In democratic countries, when an opposition remains and becomes unreliable like Berisha, suddenly a new opposition is born. The vacuum of the unreliable opposition is not filled by the government. We have the example of Macron, Tsipras, Meloni. New oppositions are immediately born because these are democratic countries. We say Rama grows up, because Shehaj, Qori, Lapaj, Berisha are not doing it. We are telling people, as in the darkest dictatorships, that only one person can do it here, hence the slogan of the SP; "Only with Edin can we go to the EU".
Ardit Bido : This is, as if the elections were 90% SP and 10% others. Albanians voted freely. I saw in the field, even administration employees openly with the DP. There are democrat teachers.
Andi Bushati : The SP MP says if you didn't vote for the SP, don't come to work on Monday.
Ardit Bido : I know teachers who are right-wing. There are deputy school principals who are with the DP. It used to be taboo for people to come out openly.
Andi Bushati: The people in the administration have been openly blackmailed, quit your job if you don't bring votes.
