Prime Minister Edi Rama's secret agreement with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni to house thousands of illegal immigrants in Albania has sparked strong debates.
The agreement was reached in a complete lack of transparency from Rama and Meloni, causing a lot of ambiguity.
Recently, a senior Italian official has stated that in the camps that will be set up in Albania, the possibility is being looked at that illegal immigrants will suffer a period of detention before being repatriated.
This raises many questions, since it was said earlier that the only immigrants who will come to Albania are those who will be caught at sea. While serving the period of 18 months of detention in Albania, as stated by the undersecretary in the Presidency of the Council, Giovanbattista Fazzolari, means that it is about that category of immigrants who have committed crimes in Italy and are awaiting repatriation.
"We have decided that those who do not have the right can be detained for up to 18 months pending repatriation, we want to implement this "time period" in Albania as well. There is the possibility of detention for up to 18 months" under Italian law, and the government intends to 'export' this time frame to the centers that will be created in Albania under Italian jurisdiction.
