Today, at 10:00, the Laws Commission of the Municipality of Tirana will meet, where the request of the socialist councilors for the dismissal of Erion Veliaj from the position of mayor is expected to be included in the agenda. In the afternoon, at 16:00, the issue will be discussed in the Municipal Council.
A few days ago, Veliaj sent a letter to the City Council requesting to attend the meeting. The Council Secretary, Behar Zeneli, responded that if the mayor cannot physically appear at the meeting, he can send the claims in writing.
Veliaj responded by reminding them that the Secretary cannot assume the role of a collegial body, as his powers are only administrative.
According to him, so far he has not received any official notification about the meeting, the reasons for his dismissal or the materials that hold him responsible. He emphasizes that he has not been guaranteed the right to be heard, while adding that his presence in the hall should have been decided by the Municipal Council, even without his request. For this reason, Veliaj asked the Council to express its opinion by vote on his participation.
We recall that Veliaj has been in pre-trial detention with the security measure "prison arrest" since February 10, 2025, when he was arrested by order of the GJKKO after being accused by SPAK of 13 charges, including 9 cases of corruption.
