Calculating all required expenses, including food, transportation, guards' payments or other necessary services, the costs of a convict, until a year ago, were 2600 Lek or 25 euros, while today they are calculated at 30 euros. So, with a simple calculation, a convict costs our society 900 euros per month or 10,800 euros per year. And with the capacities held by the institutions today, society pays 160 thousand euros per day or 59 million euros per year.
"The court tends to give prison terms rather than other security alternatives, such as house arrest, property bail, and the obligation to appear that would ease the population in the prison system and would not need so much investment and cost in financial and human terms. Everything has unaffordable costs and negative effects", said the head of the Helsinki Committee, Erida Skëndaj.
People's Advocate Erinda Ballanca said that Albania has an alarming number of people sentenced to life imprisonment.
"An incarcerated person costs a lot to society and does not necessarily give back the security that we achieve by locking him up within the penitentiary system.
