The US, EU and other diplomats have publicly called for the process to be transparent.
On Monday at 10:00, the High Prosecutorial Council will convene its members to review whether the four candidates for the leadership of SPAK meet the legal requirements to continue the race. The agenda will be the approval of the list of names that pass the first formal phase. Only after that, the candidates will be invited for interviews and presentation of the platform before the KLP.
" This meeting will be organized in the meeting room in the presence of the Members of the High Prosecutorial Council, as well as representatives from the Prosecutor General, the Ministry of Justice, the Eu4Justice Project and the OPDAT Program ", the KLP officially announces.
The four names in the race are: Adnan Xholi, Klodian Braho, Doloreza Musabelliu and Ervin Gokaj. All four have submitted their applications and vision for the leadership of SPAK, while the procedure is expected to last several weeks. Altin Dumani's mandate ends on December 18 and the battle for the successor is officially open.
But this process is not simply administrative. Already, international partners have raised the alarm about political efforts to influence the selection of the new head of SPAK. The US, EU and other diplomats have publicly demanded that the process be transparent, fair and untainted by narrow interests.
“ The integrity of the process for selecting the SPAK Special Prosecutor is essential to continued cooperation between the United States and Albania in the fight against international organized crime, ” the US embassy said. The EU, Germany and other diplomatic representatives have stressed that this process is crucial for civic trust and the path towards European integration.
The KLP is facing a difficult test. If it gives in to political pressure, the entire justice reform project risks turning into a farce. If it resists and chooses with integrity, it will send a signal that the Albanian judiciary can be truly independent.
