A decade ago, the number of Albanians in American law enforcement was about 200.
In 2023, according to the "Albanian-American Law Enforcement Association", this figure has reached over 700.
Voice of America spoke with several members of law enforcement bodies in New Jersey and New York, who talk about the challenges of their careers and the importance of increasing the number of Albanian-Americans in blue uniform.
34-year-old Vezir Sela began his career in American law enforcement 15 years ago.
Today, he is an officer in the Bergen County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey, a high-risk job that is vital to community safety.
Bergen consists of 70 municipalities and is the most populous municipality in New Jersey.
"You never know what you're getting into. It depends on the nature of the crime and the people. We need to make sure we have all the equipment working. The body camera must be charged. Our cars are equipped with everything, from medical aid, weapons, computers and other things", says officer Sela.
In an interview for the Voice of America, the officer born in the United States, talks about the challenges at the beginning of his career, when he was only 19 years old.
"I am the first in my family to become part of the law enforcement bodies. I didn't know what was waiting for me. I didn't know where I was getting into. In the police academy, I didn't know how to run, how to shoot a gun. It was a big challenge for six months. It took me a lot of work and dedication. I had the mentality of a young man. But I am happy that I started my career at a young age", he says.
Years later, the number of Sela family members in American law enforcement increased.
Hadis Sela is a Special Forces (SWAT) officer in Hudson County, New Jersey.
While Adem Sela is a detective in the Prosecutor's office in the municipality of Paseiki in New Jersey.
"In general, there are six members of the Sela family who are police officers in New Jersey. We are in different municipalities. This is a professional job, it will be dignified and a lot of work. It is a job that is recognized, unlike other jobs, so the respect is greater", says officer Hadis Sela for the Voice of America.
"It is a very important task for us Albanians to show that we are great workers. That we are ready to serve this country, the Albanian-American community and other communities as well. We expect more Albanians to join the law enforcement bodies. As a workplace, it's a great career, you meet a lot of people, you deal with a lot of things. No day is monotonous", says Albanian-American detective Adem Sela.
Shtimi i numrit të shqiptaro-amerikanëve në organet e rendit është një nga qëllimet kryesore të “Shoqatës Shqiptaro-Amerikane të Zbatimi të Ligjit”, e themeluar më 2019, një organizatë mbarëkombëtare që mbështet shqiptarët që duan të nisin një karrierë në policinë amerikane.
“Tani jemi si nata me ditën. Më përpara, kur kishim nevojë për një përvojë, ose këshillë, nuk mund ta gjeje dot. Tani është fare e thjeshtë”, thotë Elton Shametaj, themeluesi i shoqateës
Sipas zotit Shametaj, para një dekade numri i policëve shqiptaro-amerikanë ishte rreth 200, ndërsa tani ky numër ka shkuar në mbi 700 pjesëtarë.
Ai thotë se gati një në 30 pjesëtarë është grua.
Në përgjithësi, shton zoti Shametaj, shoqata ka rreth 2 mijë aplikime nga shqiptaro-amerikanë të interesuar t’u bashkohen organeve të rendit.
“Falë zotit këtu në Amerikë vetëm qielli është kufiri. Ne, si të gjithë tjerët, jemi shumë të integruar. Shqiptarët mund të ankoheshin më përpara, por shqiptarë tani ke në Shtëpinë e Bardhë, tek FBI-ja (Byroja Federale e Hetimeve), ATF-ja (Byroja për Alkoolin, Duhanin, Armët dhe Eksplozivët), në Departamentin e Drejtësisë, shqiptarë ke kudo”, thotë themeluesi i kësaj organizate Elton Shametaj.
Këta zbatues të ligjit, megjithëse shumica prej tyre kanë lindur në Shtetet e Bashkaura, mbajnë lidhje të forta me shqiptaro-amerikanët, përmes pjesëmarrjes në pothuajse çdo organizim të komunitetit.
“Baba më ka mësuar që të mos e harroj kombin, të mos e harroj vendin dhe traditën. Të dish gjuhën tënde, sepse jemi shqiptarë. Prejardhjen mos e harroni, të jemi pranë vendit tonë dhe të jemi bashkë, që të përparojmë si shqiptarë”, thotë shqiptaro-amerikani Azmi Toska, që për tetë vite shërben si oficer policie në bashkinë e Hadsonit në Nju Xhersi.
Sipas tyre me rritjen e numrit të shqiptarëve në organet ligjzbatuese, po ndryshon edhe perceptimi i shoqërisë amerikane për shqiptarët.
“Çdo vend ka qytetarë që marrin pjesë në aktivitete të ndryshme kriminale. Shqiptarët, në çdo film që e kemi parë, janë portretizuar si kriminelë, gjë që nuk është e vërtetë. Ne jemi njerëz familjarë, jemi punëtorë të mëdhenj. Angazhimi në organet e zbatimit të ligjit është një karrierë me të cilën duhet të mburremi. Kërkon guxim, krenari dhe përkushtim”, thotë Altin Çeloaliaj, detektiv në Autoritetin e Portit të Nju Jorkut dhe Nju Xhersit.
“Ato epitete që na kanë vënë si shqiptarë, kur kemi ardhur në fillim kanë qenë thjeshtë të momentit. Ne po e tregojmë veten në këto vitet në vazhdim se cilët jemi në të vërtetë. Po tregojmë se jemi zbatues të ligjit, duam punën e mirë dhe se duam të bëjmë diçka të dobishme”, shton Besmir Sajdarasi, oficer policie në Stejtën Ajllënd të Nju Jorkut.
