Europol's mega-operation with 67 arrested, SPAK gives details: 4 criminal

A joint operation of Interpol, Europol, Eurojust, with the help of the International Police Cooperation Service, led to the execution of 83 security measures in Italy, Albania, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. The arrest warrants were issued by the Florence Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office.

SPAK prosecutor Vladimir Mara has given details about the crackdown on 4 criminal groups involved in drug trafficking in EU countries.

In an appearance for the media, he emphasized that in the framework of this operation, whose investigations have lasted for 2 years, 200 bank accounts and 30 commercial companies and assets of the persons involved have been seized in Albania.

"It is now clear that organized crime has crossed any kind of border. Today's operation shows that without cooperation, corruption cannot be fought. It was an investigation carried out by the Prosecutor's Office of Florence and SPAK.

The activity of 4 criminal groups spanning all over Europe has been documented. In parallel with the criminal investigations, the assets were investigated. 

More than 200 bank accounts of persons involved in this activity, 30 commercial companies, 18 real estates and other movable assets have been seized in Albania. These are assets that are suspected to have been created thanks to the criminal activity of drug trafficking. All traffickers of narcotics towards EU countries", said the prosecutor, among other things.  

Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor's Office informs that, within the framework of cooperation with international partners, assets worth 5 million euros have been seized.

While 67 people have been arrested in Albania, Italy, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Other preventive measures have been taken against 12 others in Italy.

In connection with this operation, 32 commercial entities, 45 vehicles, 4 motor vehicles, over 200 bank accounts, 19 real estates were seized in Albania.

Notice of the prosecution: 

On 05.02.2024, the coded operation "Muratori" was finalized, developed within the framework of criminal proceedings no. 270 of 2021, registered for the criminal offenses of "Trafficking of narcotics", carried out in the special form of cooperation of the group of structured criminal, "Structured criminal group", "Cleaning of products of criminal offense or criminal activity" and "Commitment of criminal offenses by criminal organization and structured criminal group", provided by articles 28/4, 283/a, 287, 333/a and 334 of the Criminal Code.

The investigations of this criminal proceeding were carried out within the framework of the Joint Investigation Team established between the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime and the Prosecutor's Office of Florence, Anti-Mafia Section, Italy, with the mediation of EUROJUST.

Italian and Albanian authorities have taken action against a large drug trafficking network operating in both countries. With the support of Eurojust and Europol in a large-scale operation, today on 05.02.2024, 67 suspects were arrested in Albania, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, and against 12 suspects of other preventive measures were taken in Italy. The network mainly trafficked heroin, cocaine, hashish using double floor cars or secret compartments.

Last year, during an operation against the same organized crime group, 21 Albanian citizens were arrested in Albania. This operation also led to the seizure of a quantity of narcotics worth 2.7 million euros.

Today's operation led to the seizure of assets worth 5 million euros.

In Albania, 32 commercial entities, 45 vehicles, 4 motor vehicles, over 200 bank accounts, 19 real estates were seized.

Two Europol officers were deployed in Albania and Italy during the day of the operation to support the national authorities with their investigative measures.

Today's operation was carried out on the ground at the request and with the support of the following authorities:

Italy: Office of the Public Prosecution of Florence; The Carabinieri Corps with the support of the Italian Ministry of Internal Affairs - International Police Cooperation Service;

Albania: Special Structure Against Corruption (SPAK); State police;

State law enforcement agencies of Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.

It is reported that in the early hours of this morning, the carabinieri carried out executions throughout the national territory and with the support of the Albanian, Spanish, Dutch and German police forces, in other countries of the European Union.

The operation dismantled a structured criminal organization of a transnational nature involved, at various levels, in drug trafficking activities (cocaine, heroin, MDMA, hashish and marijuana), in Italy and other European Union states, as well as in Albania .

The investigation also concerned the retail supply chain of the same substances in the Florence area. The operation started at 04.00 in the morning in Italy and has been developed in several European countries.

The investigation started in 2019 and concerns drug trafficking from Albania to Italy through ships that landed in Brindisi and from the Netherlands through double bottom vehicles.
