Lawyer Edmond Petraj said that former President Ilir Meta has no evidence for his claims regarding the events of January 21, while emphasizing that the issue has now focused on the "chain of command" of the Republican Guard.
According to Petraj, the protesters that day “were without weapons or military equipment,” and the situation may have gotten out of control of the Guard structures. He accused Meta of trying to blame Lulzim Basha and protect Sali Berisha, while adding that “there will be punishments” for the Guard’s role.
Petraj also mentioned the rumors of the time about a group coming from Macedonia that supposedly would support Berisha, emphasizing that these remain only within the framework of the reports of that period. According to him, Meta's movements are political and aim to influence the justice processes.
"Meta has no evidence. The issue is focused on the chain of command. On 'January 21', the protesters were without tanks, without weapons, I have the impression that the Guard chain got out of control over this situation. Meta is trying to make Basha guilty and protect Berisha. There is no more than what Meta offers. The Guard chain is the responsible part and will be punished. Berisha will throw 'January 21' at them, he will throw them at them, he is a master of slippage.
"There was a lot of talk at the time about a group that came from Macedonia to support Berisha, to protect him from 'January 21'. It is thought that there were characters who came who wanted to protect Berisha. This always remains in the news. Meta has nothing to give up. It is a political movement to protect Berisha from justice ," Petraj told 'AbcNews'.
