The Italian Navy patrol ship Libra is in international waters south of the Lampedusa peninsula waiting to take on board more African asylum seekers rescued at sea to take them to the camps that have been set up in Shengjin e Gjadër. According to Interior Minister Mateo Piantedosi, the transfer of asylum seekers to Albania will be able to resume as soon as the logistical conditions are created.
" I am confident that with the safe states decree of the last days we can overcome the lack of validity from the judicial authority and operations can resume. All this is a preview of a European regulation already in force for 2026 and other countries are even discussing to anticipate it. Court cases are settled inside the courtroom. When there is a decision from the higher courts, the legal framework will be determined ," he said.
Piantedosi did not give many details about the departure schedule, but according to Italian media, the ship Libra is expected in the port of Shengjin in the coming days.
There is a small group of 9 asylum seekers on board, according to official communications from the Ministry of the Interior.
There, a careful preliminary check was carried out by the Italian authorities at the border to ensure that they are persons subject to expedited procedures. The ship expects to load more asylum seekers to reach an adequate number, after controversy over the costs of transfer to Albania.
The first contingent in Shengjin, of 16 asylum seekers transported by the ship Libra, were then returned to Italy by the decision of the Court of Rome. Recently, the court of Catania questioned the Meloni government's list of safe countries, sanctioning the fact that Egypt is not a safe country, so those coming from this country cannot go to Albania.
The Italian authorities want to avoid the repetition of similar cases.
