The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, seems to have pinned his hopes on the Americans for the release of Freddy Beller, as he held a meeting with the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate, Bob Menendez.
According to the Greek media, it is said that the two politicians discussed Greek-American relations and "developments in the region and beyond" during a lunch in Athens.
At the moment, there are two hot topics that concern Greece in the region, Turkey's request for the purchase of F-16 aircraft from the United States of America and the imprisonment of Freddy Beller.
For both of these, Bob Menendez has been an advocate for Greece, whether blocking the sale of F-16s to Turkey due to repeated violations of Greek airspace, or the Beleri case, to which he immediately responded by raising suspicions of an arrest with a political background.
"I always question something that happens two days before the elections," he said a few days after the May 14 elections.
"I understand that free and fair elections, including an independent judiciary, are key elements of democracy. I am concerned that the Albanian police arrested a Greek citizen two days before the elections. We will see how the evidence will turn out. The Greek government has made it clear that this will have implications for Albanian aspirations towards the EU. What are we doing to ensure that the Albanian authorities are enforcing the law?" Menendez asked.
Even a few days ago, in one of the meetings of the committee he leads, Menendez expressed concern about the planes that Turkey is looking for and about the operation of the Albanian police in Camp Ashraf, where the Mujahideen have taken refuge. Although he welcomed Albania's decision to shelter the mujahedin, he raised questions about the violation of the rights of the Iranian opposition and asked the US administration to be more attentive to respect for human rights in Albania.

The lunch with the Greek prime minister and Menendez's strong stance towards Albania do not bode well for the Rama government. Moreover, at this moment, Menendez has a powerful stone in his hand, such as giving approval for Biden to sell the promised planes to Erdogan. On the other hand, the president of Turkey holds what has been called "Swedish blackmail", since he has promised to approve Sweden's membership in NATO in the parliament, but has not yet done so.
Right in the middle of this game, Prime Minister Rama has been added, for whom Beleri needs to be in prison for a few more weeks, until the deadline set by the law for him to take the oath passes.
