Noise pollution beyond permitted norms, the three noisiest areas in Tirana

Noise levels are problematic in some areas with high traffic and intense economic activity, with the most affected areas including “Pazari i Ri”, “Sheshi Italia” and “Rrugë e Kavajës”, where decibel levels often exceed the recommended limits for a healthy environment.

This is one of the findings in the Annual Report "Air Quality and Noise Pollution", compiled by the organization Co-PLAN, with funding from the Swedish government.

To carry out the monitoring, 13 stations were selected, on the small ring road of Tirana, while measurements were carried out during the period August-December 2024, covering three different seasons: summer, autumn and the beginning of winter.

According to the report, this time period allows for an assessment of air pollution and noise pollution depending on seasonal factors, such as temperature changes, precipitation, population mobility and construction activities. In addition to the above areas, some of the monitored points include "21 December Crossroads", "Kavaja Street", "Black Bird", "Skënderbej Square", "Piramidë", "Italia Square", "Mihal Grameno" School, "Bardhyl Street", etc.

The measurements were conducted in 6 different rounds and for each of them there are fluctuations in the results. For example, in the first round Sheshi Italia has the highest level of acoustic pollution, with 72.2 dB, indicating that this is one of the noisiest areas measured.

While, in the second round, "Treni" and "Pazari i Ri" are among the noisiest areas, with levels reaching up to 66.8 dB and 67.5 dB, highlighting the high impact of traffic and visitor frequency.

According to the report, continuous exposure to noise pollution can have negative effects on residents' health, causing stress, chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, hearing problems and sleep disorders.

For this reason, measures are required to reduce noise levels, but also air pollution, especially through the addition of active green surfaces, the planting of native plants that can absorb more pollutants, and the stimulation of green facades or vertical greenery./ SCAN
