American Ambassador Yuri Kim held a reception ceremony today, celebrating the Independence Day of the United States of America. Since she will be leaving, the ceremony was held today. Personalities from politics, art, media, etc. have been invited there. Kim himself delivered an opening speech, quoting Ambassador Baker's words: "You are with us and we are with you!"
"From all the activities that I have been a part of or seen from all the people in the 61 municipalities that I have visited, as well as this beautiful country that I have met over the last three and a half years, it is clear to me that the people of Albania have made their choice: to be free and democratic, to be among those nations that will protect the freedom and democracy of others, to make sure that Albania is never hidden from this world. So, you are like us. I think that Secretary Baker must have felt this when he said from Skënderbej Square in 1991: "You are with us and we are with you!". Just as the Americans declared our election in 1776, the Albanians declared their election in 1991," said Kim.
There was also a message for those with whom she has had disagreements: "And this may be my last chance to see some of you face to face, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude my deepest condolences to all of you for what you have done. I am grateful to know that each of you is making a tremendous contribution to US-Albania relations and to your country. I think with every person here I've had one disagreement or another, with some of you more than others, but I still believe - just as I believed from the beginning - that what unites us is so much greater than what separates us. So thank you for being here tonight to join us in the party and thank you for your friendship and advice. And we'll see you in Washington."
The ambassador's speech
Mr. President, I thank you very much for your kind words on behalf of the Albanian people. Madam Speaker, Excellencies, distinguished guests, friends – thank you for joining us in celebrating the 247th anniversary of the Independence of the United States. At our founding, Americans declared through our Constitution that "We the People" and no one else - no king, no general, no ruler - no one but "We the People" have the power and the right to decide who we are, what we want and what will be our fate. You may recall that I turned to these well-known words of the American Constitution last year. I am repeating them tonight because the idea behind "We the People" is more important than ever before for both of our countries and, indeed, for the entire world.
"We the People" is a statement about action and choice in a democracy: We affirm that "We the People" are the source of power and what we choose matters most.
I would like to focus this evening on choice, which is necessarily about the future. We can argue about the past, but we cannot change it. We can only choose what happens next.
Nga të gjitha veprimtaritë në të cilat kam qenë pjesë apo kam pare nga të gjithë njerëzit në të 61 bashkitë që kam vizituar, anekënd këtij vendi të bukur të cilët i kam takuar gjatë tre viteve e gjysmë të fundit, për mua është e qartë se populli i Shqipërisë e ka bërë zgjedhjen e tij: të jetë i lirë dhe demokratik, të jetë ndër ato kombe që do të mbrojë lirinë dhe demokracinë e të tjerëve, për t’u siguruar që Shqipëria të mos fshihet kurrë nga kjo botë. Kështu, ju jeni si ne. Mendoj se këtë duhet ta ketë ndjerë Sekretari Baker kur tha nga sheshi Skënderbej në vitin 1991: “Ju jeni me ne dhe ne jemi me ju!”.
Ashtu si amerikanët deklaruan zgjedhjen tonë në vitin 1776, shqiptarët deklaruan zgjedhjen e tyre në vitin 1991.
Amerikanët zgjodhën më 4 korrik 1776, të jenë të lirë; të besojnë se qytetarët janë burimi, jo subjekt i pushtetit të qeverisë; të angazhohen për të zgjedhur të ardhmen tonë çdo ditë për ta bërë bashkimin tonë më të përsosur; të pranojnë se jemi qenie njerëzore që herë pas here do bëjmë gabime, por që besojmë se për shkak se jemi amerikanë do të ngrihemi dhe do të provojmë sërish, dhe do të zgjedhim më mirë.
Tridhjetë e dy vjet më parë, shqiptarët, ju – si ne – zgjodhët të jeni të lirë; ju – si ne – vendosët që qytetarët janë burimi, jo subjekti, i pushtetit të qeverisë; ju – si ne – e dini se demokracia kërkon përkushtim dhe qëndrueshmëri; ju – si ne – dëshironi që fëmijët tuaj të jetojnë në një botë ku kanë një shans të barabartë për të ndjekur lumturinë; ju – si ne – jeni të gatshëm të bëni punën e vështirë për ta bërë të ardhmen më të mirë se e shkuara.
Nëse kam mësuar diçka nga koha ime në Shqipëri është se ne – amerikanë dhe shqiptarë – jemi njësoj në shumë mënyra, përfshirë në mënyrat më të rëndësishme. Shpresoj që populli amerikan dhe populli shqiptar – Ne, Populli – ta ruajmë gjithmonë këtë afri. Dhe shpresoj që të gjithë do të shohin se ne – si ju – nuk do të dorëzohemi kurrë në kërkesën tonë për një të ardhme më të drejtë, më të fortë dhe më të begatë për të gjithë ne.
And this may be my last chance to see some of you face to face, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for what you have done. I am grateful to know that each of you is making a tremendous contribution to US-Albania relations and to your country. I think with every person here I've had one disagreement or another, with some of you more than others, but I still believe - just as I believed from the beginning - that what unites us is so much greater than what separates us.
