President Bajram Begaj has reacted to an opposition request, according to which, following warnings from the US about the risk of Iranian attacks on Albanian territory, the National Security Council should convene urgently. The request was articulated in the Assembly, initially by Fatmir Mediu, and then by other opposition MPs, who considered national security not the exclusive domain of the Prime Minister or individual ministers, but of the Council headed by the President of the Republic.
"I want to remind the prime minister that national security issues are not the exclusive domain of either the ministry or the prime minister. It is the National Security Council. I ask the president to urgently convene the National Security Council ," said Mediu, a request that was also supported by the opposition as a whole.
The Presidency's response states that the President of the Republic is in daily contact with the institutions of the National Security Council and is informed by them about every situation and scenario, as well as about all measures taken within the framework of security protocols.
"The President of the Republic has ascertained that all relevant institutions are vigilant and in full pursuit of the situation. Executive security mechanisms are active and functional. Also, the President of the Republic has ascertained that institutional cooperation and that with foreign and international partners is at extremely high levels," the official announcement of the Presidency states.
Regarding the warning officially distributed the day before, which stated that groups linked to Iran could target our country, the American Embassy said in a media reaction that we are cooperating closely with Albanian authorities to assess the situation and mitigate security risks.
Meanwhile, at least three ministers, Besfort Lamallari, Ermal Nufi and Ferid Hoxha, have downplayed the alarm given by the US, stating that there is no information about acts of attack. But on the other hand, it is reported that the anti-terrorist has increased security measures, especially near diplomatic headquarters, but also near the camp where the MEK mujahideen are sheltering.
Reaction from the President
Given the interest of media representatives in the National Security Council meeting by the President of the Republic in the context of the call that the Embassy of the United States of America made yesterday, the Press Office of the President of the Republic finds it appropriate to clarify, as follows:
– The National Security Council is an advisory body supporting the President of the Republic in the exercise of his constitutional and legal powers and responsibilities. The National Security Council does not make decisions on the issues it discusses. The Council is composed of heads of high state bodies and heads of important institutions.
The Council serves the President of the Republic, as a rule, for the discussion of recommendations for measures that the President of the Republic compiles for law enforcement institutions and institutions responsible for security regarding the coping with the risks that threaten the Republic of Albania.
– The President of the Republic is in daily contact with the institutions of the National Security Council and is informed by them about every situation and scenario, as well as about all measures taken within the framework of security protocols.
– The President of the Republic has ascertained that all relevant institutions are vigilant and in full pursuit of the situation. The executive security mechanisms are active and functional. Also, the President of the Republic has ascertained that institutional cooperation and that with foreign and international partners is at extremely high levels.
– The President of the Republic continues to communicate with the institutions responsible for public and national security, which are in constant coordination and collaboration with our partners, as well as on duty to fulfill their constitutional and legal obligations.
