The Special Prosecution Office has expanded its investigations abroad for politicians and crime bosses. During the past year, there have been a total of 163 letters of request to various countries around the world, for organized crime and corruption offenses. The data was made public in the SPAK annual report.
The breakdown by country for requests for legal assistance sent by the Special Prosecution Office would be: France 40 requests, Italy 21 requests, Netherlands 14 requests, England 11 requests, USA 9 requests, Greece 7 requests, Germany, Brazil and Kosovo with 6 requests each, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland with 4 requests each, Ecuador and Serbia, with 3 requests each, Austria and North Macedonia with 2 requests each, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, San Marino, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Colombia, Hungary, Singapore, Bulgaria, Paraguay, Malaysia, Dominican Republic, Montenegro and Poland with 1 request each.
SPAK further informs that 7 requests for legal assistance were submitted by foreign judicial authorities for 2024 with the aim not only of carrying out investigative actions, but also of controlling various premises (private or business) in the territory of the Republic of Albania. " After the decision to allow the controls by the court, in all cases the Sector has coordinated the work between foreign authorities with the investigators of the National Bureau of Investigation and State Police employees, in order to carry out the controls as effectively as possible and administer the evidence seized during the controls. The countries that have requested the control of the premises are Germany, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands ," the report emphasizes.
It is also noted that in 2024, prosecutors of the Special Prosecution Office carried out the procedure for declaring 117 people internationally wanted. " The special prosecutors have completed the necessary documentation and have subsequently cooperated closely with the Ministry of Justice, the Interpol Central Office, Prosecutors and Liaison Officers of foreign authorities covering Albania in order to identify the internationally wanted citizens and achieve their capture and extradition to the territory of the Republic of Albania, in order to execute the court decisions for the imposition of security measures or final sentences. The criminal offenses for which the internationally wanted persons have been accused have mainly been those provided for by articles 78, 79/dh, 80, 143/b, 189, 190, 245, 259, 278, 284, 287, 283/a, 298/2, 319/ç, 28/4, 333/a, 334 of the Criminal Code ”, the report continues.
