The General Prosecutor's Office has reacted after the serious incident that occurred at the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in Tirana, where Judge Astrit Kalaja was shot dead during a court session.
In the official statement, the institution describes the crime as an extremely serious event, which has not only resulted in the loss of life of a judge and the injury of two citizens, but also "a fundamental violation of the functioning of the rule of law."
"The Attorney General considers the event that occurred today in the premises of the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction, Tirana, as very serious, which, in addition to causing the loss of life of one person and the injury of two others, has at the same time fundamentally violated the functioning of the rule of law," the reaction states.
The head of the prosecution has conveyed his condolences to the family of Judge Kalaja, calling for awareness and collective responsibility in protecting the security of magistrates and justice institutions.
"The Attorney General calls on everyone to be aware and contribute to strengthening the security of magistrates in all aspects," it further states.
Following the statement, it was announced that a rapid and thorough investigation into the incident has been ordered in cooperation with the State Police, in order to clarify the circumstances, responsibilities and possible failures of the security system in the courts.
