"The money was wasted", former Prime Minister Renzi: What will happen

Former Italian Prime Minister and Senator Matteo Renzi visited the Gjadri camp to see the migrant center up close. In an exclusive interview with Euronews Albania, Matteo Renzi said that this camp cannot fulfill its function, so according to Renzi, it is best to use it for something else.

He said that one billion euros were spent on the construction of this camp, "all this money wasted, it doesn't serve Albania, it doesn't serve Italy, money wasted," he said.

Renzi said that one idea would be to transform the camp into a prison for Albanians serving their sentences in Italy, i.e. a prison under Italian jurisdiction inside Albania.

"At the moment, they are under Italian jurisdiction and they are three different things. There is a prison, with a capacity of twenty places, there is an immigrant center, with a capacity of one hundred and forty places, and then there is also the famous innovative center of the agreement between Meloni and Rama, with a capacity of about six hundred places. They do not function like this, they are not able to function. Then, or we can transform all of this into a large Italian prison, in Albania. With Albanian prisoners, because we have some Albanian prisoners and the prisons in Italy are not as beautiful as this prison here, because this one is newer," said the former prime minister.

Matteo Renzi said that there is also a second hypothesis that could be an agreement between the two states for these prisons to be placed under the administration of Albania.

"The second hypothesis is a state-to-state agreement, that is, between Italy and Albania, with the aim of these prisons coming under Albanian jurisdiction. And this is another hypothesis. But, to date, the truth is that immigration is not fought with propaganda," he said.
