After 5 days in flames, the fire at the Elbasan Landfill is extinguished

After 5 days of active fire at the Elbasan Landfill, the situation has been brought under control. As of 4:00 PM on Sunday, no more flames or smoke have been detected in the affected area.

The fire, which had involved both the surface and the undergrowth of the debris, was contained after an extensive operation involving firefighting forces, local structures, the army, and central institutions.

The entire surface of the landfill, approximately 20,000 m², is covered with over 35,000 cubic meters of soil. The thickness of the soil layer is up to 2 meters in the upper part and from 30 to 50 cm at the lateral edges. This measure aims to cut off the oxygen supply, stopping the further spread of the fire in depth.

According to preliminary assessments, the incident has had a significant impact on air quality and the surrounding environment. Experts say a period of monitoring will be necessary to assess the environmental and health effects that occurred during the days of high pollution.

It is currently unknown whether the intervention carried out constitutes a permanent solution for landfill management, or a temporary measure to stop the spread of the fire. The responsible institutions are expected to analyze the causes and propose preventive measures for similar cases in the future.

While the flames have been extinguished and the smoke has cleared from the sky over Elbasan, a fundamental question remains: Will we finally learn from this tragedy? Will there be sustainable measures to manage the waste and prevent similar situations in the future?
