Vanessa had been an obsession with him since he left her. Then in the last few weeks, he had learned of her pregnancy.
Maybe because he didn't see it in the supermarket anymore, or someone communicated its absence to him.
It would be this news that ignited something in the mind of the Albanian Bujar Fandaj, who, according to the investigators, planned and committed the murder of his Italian ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Ballan, with a knife similar to the ones found in her house in Altivole.
But above all, according to the Italian media, Fandaj had also planned in detail the alibi to avoid authorship.
Initially, a few hours before the assassination, on his profiles on social networks he posted a photo from the intersection towards Nova Gorica, in Slovenia, while on Tuesday evening when using a cell phone without a SIM card (to prevent geolocation) he called the police and confessed: "I was the one who did it, tomorrow I will surrender to the police station of Riese Pio X".
In his mind, this call was supposed to slow down the search while the man, owner of the craft company Sette Color, specializing in painting, was preparing to escape.
More strange are his actions after committing the crime. He has been cycling to avoid security cameras and above all license plate recognition systems. Bujar wandered through the countryside before stopping at the "Ci Torno" bar in San Vito di Altivole.
He was a regular customer so at around 2.40pm, when he came in, no one paid him any attention. He went to the bathroom to freshen up and perhaps to clean a small wound on his hand, between the index finger and the thumb, which he apparently suffered while stabbing Vanessa 7 times.
Then he ordered a beer and had a normal conversation with the bartenders, but in particular he stopped at the tattoos, while communicating with one of the customers.
"It was normal, he told us about tattoos. Then consumed the order. He hung out with a customer for about twenty minutes, revealing that he had recently gotten a tattoo on his arm featuring a compass rose. He said they were references to past stories involving a girl. Then he got out and got into a car, a gray Kia," said one of the bartenders.
Perhaps Fandaj hoped in this way to remove suspicion about him, but the carabinieri had already arrived at his house, having become suspicious when they found in the bag abandoned in the garden of Vanessa's house a knife and a hammer with the brand of Fandaj's company, with who had broken the glass to enter the victim's house.
