Sociologist Ergus Mërtiri debated the patriotism of Albanians in "Now with Erla Mëhillin" in front of journalist Mentor Kikia.
The latter said that patriotism is something that cannot be imposed, but is born in the heart, while Mërtiri insisted that a person is educated. It is morals and values that essentially define patriotism.
Ergys Mërtiri: You are a nationalist because you respect values, virtue, morality, all of them, and the nation is part of this value structure. When you have destroyed everything that remains there. We are neither a better nor worse people than others, but we have had the historical misfortune that in these 70-80 years we have been left poor and miserable, morally degenerate, darkened in terms of knowledge, we have become very impoverished and this has brought us here
Mentor Kikia: O Ergys, no one stops you from being a patriot, brother, because we are blaming the whole world for not letting us be patriotic. Until you are a patriot, you will not be a man. Patriotism is not taught in school, it is not bought, the person who has it in his heart expresses it.
