The Gjirokastra District Prefecture has provided today, January 9, 2026, a detailed overview of the flooding situation and damage caused by heavy rainfall and snowfall in the city and surrounding areas.
According to the prefect's daily report, some road axes have returned to normal, while some bridges and mountain roads remain problematic and require further intervention.
In the Municipality of Gjirokastra, the report announces that "the Kolonjë-Golëm road axis is back to normal, after the inert materials were removed by the company reconstructing this road axis."
However, work continues to normalize the situation at kilometer 17 of the Gjirokastër-Tepelena axis, where erosion of the Drino River embankment has created problems.
It is also reported that in the village of Dhoksat, Lunzhëri Administrative Unit, work began today to open the road, while the road axis connecting the villages of Krinë, Tranoshisht and Saraqinishtë has returned to normal after the bridge was repaired.
In the Municipality of Dropull, the Glina bridge remains problematic, while in the Municipality of Libohova, the road leading to the villages of Dhiar, Topovë and Zhej is blocked by landslides. The Municipality has intervened by removing inert materials in urban centers and clearing snow on the Suhe-Poliçan road axis. Meanwhile, the situation in the Municipality of Memaliaj is reported to be calm.
The Prefecture emphasizes that in the Municipality of Përmet, in the "Sede" neighborhood, mud has been cleared from the streets and apartments, while the families of the four evacuated apartments will continue to be accommodated in the dormitory until further notice from the Municipality of Përmet.
On the Përmet–Tre Urave Customs road axis, traffic is carried out with one lane at the entrance to the village of Petran, while in the Frashër Administrative Unit the road remains blocked due to rainfall and landslides.
The Municipality of Tepelenë announces that on the Tepelenë-Gjirokastër axis, in the place called “Shkalla e Zezë”, traffic is only possible with one lane and the situation is being monitored by the State Police. Due to snowfalls of over 30 cm, there were blockages in several villages of the administrative units of Kurvelesh and Qendër, but they were opened with the intervention of the municipality, using snow plows and throwing salt.
In the Municipality of Këlcyrë, the report states that the road to the village of Zhepove has been opened, while the road to the village of Mbrezhdan was blocked again and “tomorrow work will be done to clear the soil and return this road axis to normality.” According to OSHEE, all feeders supplying the Gjirokastër region are working, while the level of the Vjosa River is 3.5 meters in Memaliaj and 2.6 meters in Përmet.
The Prefecture emphasizes that the interventions are being carried out in cooperation with the Armed Forces and monitoring groups, and after the completion of the assessment, financial compensation measures for the affected families will also be initiated. The report concludes by noting that “the situation in the Gjirokastër region is improving, but vigilance and care for the road axis and areas at risk of landslides and flooding remain necessary.”
Citizens and travelers are warned to follow the announcements of municipalities and authorities regarding safety and free movement in the regions affected by rainfall and snow.
