Behind the scenes of Alfred Peza's resignation, BIRN: He has faced

A year after the contested election at the head of the Albanian Public Radio and Television, Alfred Peza resigned on Friday from the position of General Director.

The resignation was confirmed by the chairman of the Board of Directors of RTSH, Leka Bungo, who told BIRN that in the letter of resignation Peza does not give reasons for leaving, but the decision is irrevocable.

Peza's election to run the public television was contested due to his political past, former MP and Secretary of Media Relations for the Socialist Party until September 2021.

During his tenure as head of RTSH, he faced criticism for massive dismissals of journalists and employees of this institution.

At the end of June, while reporting to the Parliamentary Committee for Media and Education, Peza was met with criticism from the deputies, since RTSH had not implemented any of the recommendations left by the Assembly.

According to the parliamentary report, RTSH has problems with dismissals and appointments, as well as the decrease in income or uncertainty in their use, but Peza defended that the dismissals were made according to the law in order to increase the performance of the television.

The chairman of this commission, DP deputy, Ina Zhupa, described Peza's resignation as a "liberation" of RTSH from illegality.

"The liberation of RTSH is a small victory of a battle for legality," Zhupa wrote on Facebook.

The public broadcaster is in theory a politically independent institution, but the governing board is elected by parliament, while the executive director is elected by the board. The members of the current board were mainly elected by the votes of the Socialist Party. Peza did not respond to BIRN./Reporter.al's request for comment
