The head of SPAK, Klodjan Braho, stated that corruption continues to be a worrying phenomenon in the country, involving officials in several sectors. He announced that the number of corruption cases has increased, from 186 to 220 cases, while out of 30 officials and former officials investigated, half have been sent to court and 10 of them have been sentenced with a final decision.
Braho also focused on financial investigations, where 12 investigators are currently engaged and an additional 4 are expected. According to him, this sector is in the process of vetting and has shown increased effectiveness, leading to the discovery of complex money laundering schemes.
He stressed that SPAK has started pursuing assets in parallel with criminal proceedings, managing to block over 24 million euros, including 12.4 million euros in cryptocurrencies. He also noted the increase in cooperation with international partners, while an 18% increase in new corruption cases was recorded and 6 new proceedings were initiated against senior officials.
