Increased cases of abuse of minors, changes in the Criminal Code: Tougher

Penalties for crimes against minors will be tougher. The new changes in the Penal Code foresee the punishment of more years in prison for sexual relations with minors, as well as the prison sentence for bigamy.

Recent crimes of a sexual nature against minors have led to the proposal of amendments to the Criminal Code in the parliament. In the project that has been presented for public debate, the toughening of punishments for some criminal offenses is foreseen.

Thus, in the proposal of changes, the age for defining relations with minors as a crime is increased. While the current Code considered it a crime to have sex up to 14 years old, with the new changes this age is up to 16 years old.

The Code states that "cohabitation of an adult with a minor between the ages of 14 and under 16, when it is for the same purposes as marriage or a similar relationship, is punishable by four to eight years of imprisonment". If cohabitation is carried out with a minor between the ages of 16 and 18, it is punishable by imprisonment from two to five years.

Regarding the criminal offenses against marriage, according to the proposals in the New Code, it is stated that "contracting two or more marriages at the same time is punishable by a fine or imprisonment of up to three years". If bigamy continues after the first conviction, it is punishable by imprisonment from six months to four years, reports "Euronews Albania".

Other changes to the Code provide for harsher penalties for crimes related to pedophilia and child abuse.
