Speaking about the arrest of former minister Ilir Beqaj, the lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu said that the US and the EU reacted harshly when Rama appointed Beqaj as director of SASPAC.
Invited to the show "Frontline" on "Report Tv", Spahiu stated that SPAK was obliged to determine the prison sentence for Beqaj.
" The arrest was waiting for both of them. Commentary is beyond legal analysis. Takes political dimensions. If there was no political corruption in the appointment of Beqaj, there would be no corruption. If the director of the agency for projects and monitoring of EU funds was not appointed, who had an open file, there would not have been a second file. The second appointment was met with negative reaction from the international community. The US and the EU have warned Edi Rama not to nominate a person with an open criminal record. They reacted diplomatically and openly.
Today the Voice of America, the ambassadors of the USA and EU have left demonstratively when Beqaj gave a speech as the director of this agency. For the first time, they go and boycott an official of a state, it was not just a reaction to Ilir Beqaj but to the government. And we come to the second legal analysis. SPAK was obliged to determine the arrest in prison. When you are facing a subject with a lighter measure and during the investigation there is information about other crimes, then a more severe measure is given. It could happen that the prime minister gives Beqaj a higher position and he continues to steal ," said Spahiu.
