The US Department of State has returned the "non grata" to the Balkans. After the crackdown on Gruevski, Berisha and some officials in Bosnia, the US has sent another signal that the blacklist is much longer.
DASH has today declared Ramiz Merko, the mayor of the Municipality of Struga in North Macedonia, undesirable. In the announcement of the Department of State, it is stated that the mayor of the municipality of Struga has misused funds and interfered in court proceedings and other public proceedings, damaging the public's trust in the democratic institutions of North Macedonia.
" Today's action sends a message that the United States stands by North Macedonia to promote stability by strengthening democratic institutions and addressing deficiencies related to the rule of law. This determination reaffirms the commitment of the United States to fight corruption, which harms the public interest, hinders the economic prosperity of countries, and diminishes the ability of governments to respond effectively to the needs of their people," concludes the announcement of the US Department of Defense . States.
Along with him, his family members are also banned from entering the US.
Ramiz Merko was born on April 12, 1957 in Struga. He is an Albanian politician from Macedonia in the ranks of DUI. Merko was the mayor of the municipality of Struga during the period 2005-2013 and was a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia during the period 2014-2016.
In 2017, he was elected minister without portfolio in Zoran Zaev's government and at the same time served as president of the DUI branch in Struga.
In the 2017 local elections, he defeated his opponent from the ranks of the Alliance for Albanians, Zijadin Selë, becoming mayor of Struga for the third time.
His declaration "non grata" is an alarm bell for the politicians of the Balkans. DASH has stated several times that there will be many people who will be sanctioned, including Albania. The fact that DASH has reached the heads of municipalities in Macedonia, it is certain that there will be much higher levels in Albania.
