Across the Balkans, OPDAT provides technical assistance to senior prosecutors on high-profile corruption cases
American experts return to SPAK and GJKKO, thus demonstrating the support of the United States of America for anti-corruption and organized crime structures.
For at least two months, questions were raised about whether or not the US would continue its support for SPAK and GJKKO, after an executive order by President Donald Trump suspended US funding and assistance worldwide, effectively 'screening' projects that were funded or supported with US grants.
But it seems that regarding issues related to the fight against corruption and organized crime, the US will continue to support not only structures in Albania, but also in the entire Balkan region, the Baltic countries, but also in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania and the Mediterranean region.
The return of American experts to SPAK and GJKKO seems to be accelerating the investigative processes of the special structure, especially in relation to corruption. There are several files that are considered 'hot' in the hands of SPAK prosecutors where investigations are underway involving officials and former officials of medium and high levels, people with immunity or vested with power. And referring to an official position from the Department of Justice, it seems that assistance or help to special prosecutors, especially in relation to the fight against corruption and money laundering, will be essential.
In an official announcement from the US Department of Justice, it is announced that "recently, and in particular through its regional programs for the Western Balkans, Baltics, and Mediterranean, OPDAT provides extensive technical assistance focused on money laundering, sanctions violations, and other sophisticated financial crimes related to corruption."
The official position of the Department of Justice states that the effective fight against corruption is a key criterion for the EU membership process.

“OPDAT develops the investigative and prosecutorial capacity of partners across Europe against corruption and provides assistance in drafting legislation to strengthen the relevant legal framework and ensure compliance with requirements and conventions to support American businesses.
In Albania, OPDAT played a significant role in establishing a constitutionally protected, independent, and vetted Special Prosecution Unit against Organized Crime and Corruption (SPAK), which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting high-level corruption. OPDAT also supported a rigorous system of vetting all judges and prosecutors in Albania for unexplained wealth, corruption, or links to organized crime.
Across the Balkans, Baltics, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania and the Mediterranean, OPDAT provides technical assistance to senior prosecutors on high-profile corruption cases," an official statement said. /Pamphlet/
