The collapse of the Librazhd-Pogradec road

The Director of the Albanian Road Authority, Ami Kozeli, stated that the Librazhd-Pogradec axis is finally unusable for traffic and that its condition is deteriorating, despite the interventions of the contracting company "ANK" in the lot where the most severe damage has been recorded.

Kozeli said that throughout the evening the contractor continued the work at a good pace, but the ground and bridge movements continued. He explained that the bridge has suffered a displacement of 40 centimeters in total, while in just one day a movement of 7 centimeters was recorded.

The contractor is working intensively, but authorities are keeping the road closed. Kozeli expressed hope that the road could be opened tomorrow, depending on developments on the ground.

The Albanian Road Authority is awaiting the results and recommendations of the Albanian Geological Service. According to preliminary results, there is a landslide plan of up to 7 meters in the area.

Kozeli stressed that the winter season has been abnormal and that for three months in a row the rainfall has not stopped. He added that the area faces landslide problems every year during this season, but this year the situation appears to be more serious.

The Director of the ARRSH stated that the contractor has submitted proper documentation. He said that the final report of the Geological Survey will determine the measures that need to be taken. Afterwards, the ARRSH will convene a technical council to decide on the final solution.

Kozeli recalled that the bridge was built in 1997 and that recent damage has further worsened its condition, putting it out of service.

"The contractor continued work throughout the evening and there was a good pace. The bridge and the terrain also moved during the evening; the bridge is shown in a plan with a displacement of 40 cm, 7 cm from yesterday."

The contractor is continuing the work intensively, but the road remains closed, although we very much hope to be able to open it tomorrow.

We are awaiting the results and recommendations of the Albanian geological service. Preliminary results indicate that there is a landslide plan of up to 7 meters.

This winter season has been out of the ordinary; every year at this time of year there are landslide problems, but like never before we have had 3 months without any rain.  All documentation is in order from the contractor's side.

"The geological service report will give us recommendations for the measures we need to take; then we will meet with the technical council and address the solution. The bridge is from '97 and the damage it has suffered these days makes it more degraded and out of function," said Kozeli.
