Prostitution remains a widespread and highly lucrative activity in Albania, despite sporadic police interventions. Not only has this phenomenon not disappeared, but it seems to be expanding more and more.
As the tourist season approaches, especially during the summer, when the number of visitors increases significantly, the number of girls offering sexual services also increases.
Security expert Fatjon Softa said that in Tirana alone, there are thought to be around 1,300 to 1,500 girls who practice this activity.
According to him, coastal cities such as Durrës and Ksamil show a significant increase in this phenomenon, due to the large influx of tourists who frequent these areas during the summer season.
He also said that prices for an hour of service in the capital range from 100 to 200 euros, while daily earnings for a girl can reach up to 2,500 euros.
The girls who practice this activity are mainly Albanian, but there are also foreigners from China, various European countries, and Latin America.
The latter are often linked to organized networks, where they collaborate with Albanian citizens who have experience in this field. To carry out their activity, they provide rental premises, usually through platforms such as Airbnb.
"They range from 100-200 hours, up to 2,500 euros a day. There is a greater presence, mainly in Tirana, it is thought to be around 1,300-1,500 girls, and the rest then starts in Durrës with 200-250 and other cities up to Ksamil."
"It's been a few years since we've had an increased influx of girls who prostitute themselves in our country, mainly during the season, through several escort agencies. Initially, they started through online sites. Albanian groups, but not only Chinese groups, groups coming from Europe and Latin America, have found a collaboration with Albanians who create such an organization: They rent houses, mainly AIRBNB," the expert told "A2 CNN".
Although prostitution is prohibited by law in Albania and is sanctioned in the Criminal Code, it seems that this informal sector continues to function at a high rate.
