How much did the return to Bangladesh of the first (and currently the only) immigrant detained at the Gjadra repatriation center cost Italy?

No less than 6,000 euros, and this is a minimum estimate considering that the costs were at least twice as high as the average cost of an expulsion, which the Italian Interior Ministry itself has updated for 2024 from 2,500 to around 2,800 euros. This does not include repeated trips between Italy and Albania.

The rose seller who wanted to return home

Fahim, 49 years old, from Bangladesh, a rose seller in restaurants in Rome, with some minor criminal records and no residence permit. He will be remembered as the first to be expelled from the center of Gjadri, but not from Albania. Because the protocol signed with Tirana does not provide for direct expulsion from Albanian territory – for him and all others who will follow the same path, it is necessary to return to Italy before the deportation flight.

His story has also been told in recent days on the Rai show "Il Cavallo e La Torre". Fahim was stopped during a check in Rome and declared an irregular immigrant, initially sent to the Ponte Galeria center. It seems that he himself had expressed the desire to return to his homeland and had no intention of opposing the deportation, which could easily have been carried out directly from Rome within a few days.

Four trips in seven days

But when he was supposed to appear before the judge, Fahimi was suddenly taken and transferred to Brindisi (first trip), from where he left by boat (second trip) to the port of Shëngjin, along with 39 other migrants. He stayed in Albania for only a week, then returned to Italy (third trip), and from there (fourth and final trip) he finally left by plane for Bangladesh.

Multiple expenses

The lack of transparency about what happens in the Gjadri center does not allow for detailed information, but considering that each deportee is accompanied by two police officers, the costs for each trip are multiplied by three. Thus, a deportation that could have been carried out from Italy through the standard cost of 2,800 euros, is accompanied by a series of unnecessary expenses for the trips Rome-Brindisi, Brindisi-Albania and return for three people.

And whoever seeks asylum must return to Italy.

Other trips have been made necessary for the return to Italy of three other migrants transferred to Gjadra a few days ago: two of them due to mental health problems that were (belatedly) considered incompatible with detention in the center, and the third because he had already requested asylum. Contrary to what Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi had declared, judges at the Court of Appeal in Rome have ruled that a migrant awaiting deportation, but in the meantime requesting asylum, cannot be detained in Albania. As a result, he too has been returned to Italy – setting a precedent that could cause a new clash between the judiciary and the government./La Repubblica
