Epidemiologist Ilir Alimehmeti has spoken about the situation of viruses in the country.
Asked whether we should be concerned about the increase in measles cases among children, Alimehmeti emphasized that this situation is due to non-vaccination.
He appealed for more vaccination, as according to him this disease is in the hands of man to completely disappear.
"Actually, here we should not talk about the increase of cases, we should talk about the emergence of cases, since we have had this under control as a disease, as a population. When I speak as a population, I don't mean only within Albania, but throughout the continent. Unfortunately, with the decline in vaccination rates against measles, this situation has reappeared, we call it a re-emerging disease. Theoretically, we have it in our hands to eradicate measles, to remove it altogether, to have no cases at all. The fact that we have cases means failure in terms of collective vaccination. We know this because we have been seeing declining figures for many years since 2018. In 2018, we have reported 2466 cases of measles, if you look at the official reports, every time we report there are always more, so it is not something unknown. In August 2019, we have the status of a measles-free country from the WHO, not only for us, but also for Greece, the Czech Republic and Great Britain.
So it's a much broader issue and unfortunately we're dealing with the most transmissible virus that we know of in our human history. It is entirely within our power to eradicate it. If these vaccination rates continue in these waters year after year, we will have bigger problems. I remind you of the WHO data for the region in Europe in 2022 there were 922 reported cases, in 2023 there were 4220, that is a direct increase of 45 times within one solar year. To be specific, it is a situation that tends to worsen year after year due to this number of vaccinations" , said Alimehmeti for "Vizion Plus".
