The heat wave that has swept the country has increased the number of emergencies at the "Mother Teresa" Hospital Center in Tirana. Most patients seek help due to loss of consciousness and cardiac problems. The main danger, according to doctors, comes from dehydration or loss of fluids.
" Heat causes dehydration. Pronounced sweating. A mechanism that keeps the body temperature low but also loses salts necessary for the proper functioning of the organization. Loss of water leads to dry skin, mouth, weakness, and when we are exposed to even more heat, we reach a state of confusion or loss of consciousness ," says doctor Daniela Teferiçi.
Drink water even if you're not thirsty, that's the advice of doctors on these hot days. This way you can prevent dehydration and the loss of salts necessary to maintain balance in the body. Meanwhile, those with heart problems should review their medication doses.
" In patients with heart disease, hypotension occurs, blood vessels dilate to sweat as much as possible, to eliminate heat, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure because they are on therapy ," Teferiçi tells ABCnews.
Doctors suggest that those vacationing on the beach be careful and not immediately enter the sea after staying in a tent for a long time.
"The sudden change in temperature from hot to cold water causes vasospasm of the coronary arteries. Coronary artery spasm occurs. At that moment of entering cold water, if this narrowing occurs, the coronary arteries, resulting in a heart attack, or when it causes sudden death from blood vessel closure. Normally it happens in people who may have an unknown disease, a narrowing of the artery or young people who consume narcotics, such people are very prone, " concludes Teferiç.
In this heat wave that seems set to last, doctors advise all age groups to reduce movement during peak hours and try to stay in cool environments.
