Cannabis scandal in Zall Herr, 'VOA': Efforts to grow drugs have also

In Albania, efforts to cultivate marijuana have also included the territories of the army. Today, the police announced the seizure of 125 cannabis plants in a military ward in Zall Herr, Tirana.

In flagrante delicto, the Head of the security section and two specialists were arrested for abuse of office, while four others, including the department commander, were prosecuted.

Defense Minister Niko Peleshi reacted to the event by condemning it, while clarifying that the discovery of cannabis plants was made possible thanks to the cooperation of the military police. He announced the suspension from office of all responsible persons.

The police have long undertaken a nationwide action against the cultivation of narcotic plants. Only during this week, according to its data, nearly 6,000 forces engaged in anti-cannabis actions, destroying about 17,000 cannabis plants. In total, 12 people were arrested and 10 others were prosecuted. Only in the mountainous areas in the north of Albania, as a result of the "Clean Alps" operation, more than 46 thousand saplings and narcotic plants have been destroyed so far.

Interior Minister Taulant Balla said today through a post on Facebook that "the fight against the cultivation, trafficking and distribution of narcotics will be systematic. Illegal cultivation of cannabis has been a source of finance for criminal organizations. This source must be extinguished eventually. Other stronger blows are coming", he underlined./ VOA
